Video Conferencing vs. Telepresence

Telepresence picks up where video conferencing left off. Telepresence IS real time, full-high-definition, immersible sound and vision. Telepresence IS most importantly: the feeling of being “there” when you’re “here”. Telepresence is lifelike, video conferencing is not. Telepresence is that hi-line Mercedes AMG, video conferencing is a Ford Escort - Period.

Why Telepresence now?

Video conferencing has been around a while now but has always lacked the feeling we spoke about above. Jumpy computer screens, broken audio and poor lighting add to the impersonal touches of video conferencing (ie slow motion camcorder on top of your computer monitor). Finally, technology, bandwidth, vision and sound have all converged on video conferencing to create the telepresence experience. It’s about time! Crystal clear surround sound and real-time full-high-definition visual effects enhance the feeling of being there – thus telepresence. That nervous twitch, roll of the eyes, sniffle, tap of the foot – things you see when you’re present and sitting across a conference room table – things you don’t see or feel from video conferencing, but do with telepresence.

Today, what “real” uses are there for Telepresence?

There is no short answer even possible here. We’ll name a few, more like we’ll put your imagination to work. Imagine a single specialist doctor in Canada treating patients in Haiti via telepresence. Robots in space doing the actual work while the telepresence operator dons his telepresence helmet and gloves at his workstation in Texas. Meeting your Russian company vice president while you’re in the executive telepresence room at the office in Denver. Just a few…

What are “real” savings of Telepresence?

Your imagination still working on the last answer? Don’t let up yet! What carbon footprint? Don’t need that airplane ticket to go check on your staff in Russia now do you? What lost life in the Iraqi war? Unmanned drones and soldiers via telepresence. Military and combat cost savings? Immeasurable. Less travel costs, airline frustration, fuel, lost time, carbon emissions, etc. Those are tangible, real savings to name just a very limited few.

You starting to see what telepresence can do that video conferencing can’t? We hope you see what we’re seeing! Telepresence – its time has arrived!

Chicago, IL (PRWeb) March 29, 2007 -- Cisco Systems leads the telecommunications industry as the number one source of global innovation, according to a qualitative and quantitative analysis of 2006/2007 patent portfolios released in the annual Patent Scorecard™. The Patent Scorecard reviews all patent activity in the telecommunications sector and is published by The Patent Board, the leading independent provider of tools and metrics for patent analysis and intellectual property investing. The Patent Scorecard uses The Patent Board's industry-standard data and proprietary analytical tools to assess patent value, and ranks companies worldwide in 17 industry sectors.

Cisco retained its leading position in telecom despite the emergence of the powerful, newly merged entity Alcatel-Lucent. The French telecom, created when Alcatel acquired its American counterpart for $11.6 Billion late in 2006, raised its standings three spots from the 2006 Scorecard where Lucent ranked a solid 6th. Alcatel-Lucent topped the list for number of patents filed, with 896; Cisco was a distant fifth with 730 patents.

But Patent Scorecard rankings are not solely based on the number of patents filed by a company; the quality, scientific strength and impact of its patents on the industry are also calculated into its overall Technology Strength™ rating. Cisco's Industry Impact ™ score, which rates the impact of its patent portfolio on the industry by measuring how frequently its patents are cited by others, is higher than any other company in the top ten. Research in Motion (RIM), ranked 11th overall, has the highest Industry Impact of the top 50 companies, indicating that its technology is the most influential and most frequently built upon in the telecom industry. RIM's patents for wireless devices and related technology are cited 2.6 more times than the average.

"Cisco's advantage was additionally secured through their 2006 acquisition of Scientific Atlanta," said Eric Gillespie, chief operating officer of The Patent Board. "Scientific Atlanta is a leader in cable set-top box technology and has a solid patent portfolio that helped steady Cisco's position atop the Patent Scorecard for this year."

Third-ranked Motorola is notable for both the number of patents received (811, second overall) and its top rank in Science Strength™, which measures the degree to which a company's total patent portfolio is linked to and built upon core science.

"Motorola's Science Strength rating increased by over 200% in the past 12 months, which really validates the credibility of its ongoing R & D," said Gillespie.

About the Patent Scorecard
Standings in the 2007 Telecommunications Patent Scorecard are based on a comparison of data for the prior 12 months. The Telecommunications Patent Scorecard is primarily ranked by Technology StrengthTM, which provides an aggregate assessment of patents and innovation using a blend of quality and quantity metrics. Only industry-specific patents within a company's portfolio are considered in the calculations. Each company's portfolio is measured on its technical strength, quantity, science and research strength, and the speed at which patents become assets.

Patent Scorecards are published for 17 different industry sectors, and are available at www.PatentBoard.com. In addition, highlights from each industry-specific Patent Scorecard appear every Tuesday in the Money & Investing section of the Wall Street Journal, and online in WSJ.com's Markets Data Center, providing readers with deeper insight into patent portfolios as measurable financial assets and drivers of market value.
